Eso no es una exageración, es literalmente lo que pasó durante esta ola de frío sin precedentes que azotó la región. El fenómeno fue intenso. El domingo 1 de febrero, alrededor de las 4:45 de la madrugada, cayó nieve en Tampa Bay, algo que los meteorólogos del NWS confirmaron directamente. Nieve en Tampa, ¿pueden creerlo? Los copos se formaron por lo que llaman efecto del Golfo: los vientos fríos recogieron humedad de aguas relativamente templadas, creando la inestabilidad perfecta para que nevara en una zona donde eso casi nunca ocurre. Las temperaturas fueron brutales. Orlando amaneció a menos 4 grados Celsius, mientras que en el sur Miami tocó los 0 grados, lo que marcó su mañana más fría desde 2010. Pero lo verdaderamente extremo sucedió en otras localidades: Daytona Beach llegó a menos 5 grados, Melbourne a menos 3,8 y Vero Beach a menos 3,3. Todos récords históricos para febrero. Todo esto fue impulsado por una masiva perturbación del vórtice polar que deformó la corriente en chorro, canalizando aire ártico directo desde la Bahía de Hudson hacia la Costa del Golfo. Mientras tanto, un potente bloque de alta presión Omega mantenía la Costa Oeste y el sureste de Alaska con temperaturas inusualmente templadas, creando un contraste atmosférico que los expertos no ven frecuentemente. La bomba ciclónica que se alejaba fue la responsable de empujar ese aire gélido hacia el sur, intensificando todo. La situación se agravó porque también hubo cortes de energía. Sin calefacción en esas condiciones es realmente peligroso. Los meteorólogos emitieron múltiples advertencias sobre temperaturas peligrosamente frías, vientos fuertes y condiciones marinas adversas. Aunque se esperaban más nevadas, no iban a acumularse significativamente en el suelo. El pronóstico indicaba máximas de apenas 7 grados Celsius durante el domingo, con sensaciones térmicas de hasta menos 6 grados al amanecer. Las noches continuaron gélidas con mínimas de menos 3 grados y heladas generalizadas que se extendieron hasta el lunes por la noche. No fue hasta el martes que se previó una leve recuperación con máximas de 18 grados. Lo más sorprendente de todo esto es ver cómo un fenómeno climático tan extremo invirtió completamente la lógica geográfica que todos conocemos. Florida, históricamente el refugio del calor, experimentó frío más intenso que regiones árticas. Es el tipo de evento que te recuerda cuán impredecible puede ser el clima cuando los sistemas atmosféricos se descontrolan.
