Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA details, especially when it comes to changing your SRD number or banking info. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're getting permanent grants like old age or disability, you basically have to go in person to your nearest SASSA office. Can't do it online, which is annoying but that's how it works. You'll need your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement or official letter, nothing older than 3 months), and fill out the Payment Method Change Form. They send it to the bank for verification, and here's the thing—it can take up to 21 working days. So if you're planning to switch banks, do it early in the month, ideally before the 15th, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
Now, the SRD R370 grant is way different because it's all online. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS to confirm changes. For updating your SRD number specifically, you need your Application ID and the new phone number. They'll send an OTP to verify it's actually you. The waiting period for bank verification can be a few days to weeks after you submit, so don't expect it to be instant.
One thing I'd stress—use only the official SASSA portal. There are fake websites out there pretending to help with SRD number changes, and people have lost money that way. If the online process isn't working, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. Yeah, it might mean waiting around, but it's safer than messing with unofficial sites.
Also remember, whatever account you're putting the money into has to be in your name only. No joint accounts, no using someone else's bank account. That's a hard rule they enforce. Anyone else had issues with the waiting period taking longer than expected?
