Just went through the whole SASSA banking details update process and figured I'd share what actually works. If you're on the permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you have to go in person to your local SASSA office—no shortcuts online. Bring your ID, a recent bank statement (less than 3 months old), and be ready to fill out their Payment Method Change Form. They'll send it to the bank and it takes like 21 days to process. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that cycle's payment.

Now, if you're getting the SRD R370 grant, that's a whole different story. Everything's online and honestly way smoother. You go to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. That's where you can actually change your banking details without leaving home. The thing is, the account has to be in your name—no joint accounts or third-party stuff. Banks verify it takes a few days to a couple weeks.

For your phone number, same deal depends on your grant type. Permanent grants? Call the helpline (0800 60 10 11) or visit the office. SRD? Use their contact portal, enter your ID and Application ID, add your new number, and they'll send an OTP to verify. Just be careful—there's a bunch of fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA. Stick to the official portal or call the real helpline. The whole SRD change banking details system is pretty secure but definitely worth doing it right the first time.
