Just saw something wild - someone's actually bringing back that old free bitcoin faucet from 2010. Remember when Gavin Andresen was handing out 5 BTC to literally anyone who solved a CAPTCHA? Charlie Shrem is apparently relaunching it, which is honestly pretty nostalgic.
The crazy part? Those 5 BTC transfers from back then would be worth almost half a million dollars each right now at current BTC prices around $73K. The original free bitcoin faucet was basically Bitcoin's onboarding machine when the whole thing was still niche and mining required actual technical skills. Thousands of early adopters got their first taste of crypto through it.
The new site just went live but it's not actually distributing anything yet - no Bitcoin in the wallet. Still, the fact that someone's trying to revive this piece of Bitcoin history is kind of cool. Imagine if you'd grabbed some free bitcoin back then and just forgotten about it. That's generational wealth right there.
Not sure if this free bitcoin faucet revival will actually catch on or if it's just nostalgia, but it's interesting to see people trying to recreate that early community spirit. Times were different when giving away crypto for free seemed like a reasonable way to grow the network.
