I just read something interesting about Tencent's recent earnings conference. Ma Huateng shared a rather deep reflection on how they are thinking about the future of their AI applications. It turns out they don't want to focus solely on chatbots anymore but aim to expand these tools into much more diverse and rich scenarios.
What I found notable is how Ma Huateng connects this with their existing experience in WeChat. Mini programs within that ecosystem have always operated in a more decentralized way, and that is giving them ideas on how to structure these new AI applications. It’s not just technology for technology’s sake but thinking about how the model can benefit all involved stakeholders.
Here’s the interesting part: service providers are afraid of becoming mere channels. This is something Tencent is taking very seriously when designing its ecosystem. Partners want traffic, they want visibility, but they also don’t want to be treated as simple intermediaries. It’s a delicate balance.
Ma Huateng was quite clear in saying that the strategy must combine centralized and decentralized approaches. It’s not a quick fix, and that’s what he’s emphasizing: this requires patience. They can’t rush these designs because it affects the entire structure of their platform.
In summary, it seems Tencent is thinking long-term about how to intelligently integrate AI into its ecosystem, considering both their own capabilities and the needs of their partners. It’s a more sophisticated vision than just launching more AI tools.
