#GoogleQuantumAICryptoRisk

Google's Quantum AI team just published research that cuts the estimated cost of a quantum attack on Bitcoin and Ethereum by 20 times. What used to require millions of qubits now looks achievable with roughly 1,200 to 1,450 high-quality logical qubits. That is not a small revision. That is the entire threat model being rewritten.

The window the industry thought it had is closing faster than expected. Google puts 2029 as the practical deadline for widespread post-quantum cryptography adoption. Not 2040. Not 2035. Three years from now.

Here is what is concretely at risk: approximately 6.9 million BTC, including dormant coins where the public key is already exposed, are potentially vulnerable. Bitcoin's Taproot upgrade, which made public keys visible by default to enable more efficient transactions, ironically widens the attack surface. A sufficiently advanced quantum computer could theoretically derive a private key from a public key in around nine minutes, fast enough to intercept a transaction while it is still waiting for block confirmation.

The market has already started repricing this. Quantum-resistant tokens moved sharply within 48 hours of the paper dropping. That tells you traders are not treating this as a distant theoretical problem anymore.

The uncomfortable truth is that Bitcoin Core has not moved urgently on post-quantum standards, and the community remains divided on whether to prioritize it. If the upgrade debate takes years, and the hardware timeline keeps accelerating, those two curves are going to meet at a very bad moment.

Post-quantum cryptography exists. The tools are available. NIST finalized its post-quantum standards. The question is whether the crypto industry moves fast enough to implement them before quantum hardware crosses the threshold. History with security upgrades in this space does not inspire confidence. The ones who act early will be fine. The ones who wait for the threat to become undeniable typically find out too late.
