Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA details, especially when it comes to banking info and phone numbers. Thought I'd break down how this actually works because it's different depending on which grant you're on.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you basically can't do banking changes online. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account - they want a recent bank statement or official letter from the bank showing it's in your name. They'll give you a form to fill out, and then it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to apply the next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.

Now, if you're on the SRD grant (that R370 one), it's way more digital-friendly. You can actually update your banking details online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, you click it and input your new bank details. Takes a few days to weeks for verification, but at least you don't have to leave your house. Same rule applies though - the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts or third-party stuff.

For updating your cellphone number on SRD, there's a dedicated contact portal where you enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, and they send you an OTP to verify. Way simpler than the permanent grant process. If the online thing doesn't work, you can always call the SASSA helpline or email them directly.

One thing to watch out for - there are fake websites pretending to be SASSA trying to grab your info. Always use the official portal links only. Also, if you're doing the money transfer option instead of bank deposit, your phone number needs to be RICA-registered in your name.

Honestly, updating banking details through SRD is pretty straightforward compared to the permanent grants, but either way you need to stay on top of it to avoid payment delays.
