I recently remembered this story again, and each time I revisit it, I feel a different sense of wonder. It’s about Laszlo Hanyecz’s legendary pizza transaction—this guy traded 10,000 Bitcoins for two pizzas, making him the most famous "spender" in crypto history.

But did you know, Laszlo Hanyecz is not just someone who spends money? He was one of the early developers of Bitcoin and contributed to GPU mining optimization, making real technical contributions to the development of the Bitcoin network. It’s just that his name is ultimately remembered worldwide because of this pizza transaction.

On May 18, 2010, Laszlo posted on the BitcoinTalk forum casually, like ordering takeout: "Who can buy me two pizzas? I’ll give 10,000 Bitcoins." He was also quite particular, listing his preferred toppings—onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, and so on. At that time, nobody paid much attention to Bitcoin; 10,000 coins were worth about thirty dollars, just enough for two pizzas. The post stayed up for several days, and people on the forum probably thought he was joking.

Until May 22, when a 19-year-old named Jeremy (forum ID: jercos) appeared and said, "Okay, I’ll do it." He actually ordered two pizzas from Papa John’s and had them delivered to Laszlo’s door. Laszlo, biting into a hot pizza, then sent Jeremy 10,000 Bitcoins. The transaction was complete. He excitedly posted a photo of the pizzas on the forum, like a kid: "Guys, I really bought pizza with Bitcoin!"

This transaction might seem trivial, but its significance goes far beyond the pizza itself. It was the first real-world goods transaction in cryptocurrency history, directly proving that Bitcoin is not just code and theory but can truly be used as money. Laszlo Hanyecz’s pizza opened a door, showing everyone the potential of digital currency.

Looking back now, that transaction seems pretty crazy. With Bitcoin approaching $100,000 this year, those two pizzas are now worth over a billion dollars. The most expensive pizza in history, no doubt. But Laszlo has never regretted it. He said the goal of Bitcoin back then was to prove it could be used as a payment tool, not just to hold and appreciate. His choice was actually a message to everyone: the value of technology isn’t in hype, but in its real potential to change lives.

Since then, every May 22nd, the crypto community celebrates "Bitcoin Pizza Day." Crypto enthusiasts around the world gather to eat pizza, with some even using Bitcoin to buy pizza in tribute to this legendary moment. This holiday isn’t just about commemorating Laszlo Hanyecz’s transaction; it’s a reminder of Bitcoin’s journey from obscurity to changing the world.

Later, Laszlo Hanyecz gradually stepped out of the public eye and led a quiet life. But his position in Bitcoin history is irreplaceable. He proved that an ordinary person, with a simple idea, can leave an eternal mark in blockchain history. It’s not about how much money you make, but about the belief in new technology and the courage to try. Whenever we talk about Laszlo Hanyecz and that pizza story, we’re actually celebrating the early crypto era filled with dreams and exploration.
