The majority of blockchains are digital metrics of activity.

Transactions processed.
Blocks produced.
Tokens staked.

However, once the robots are introduced into the network, said metrics cease to be sufficient. Now the real question would be how do you measure physical work done by machines?

The solution to this issue proposed by Fabric is known as Proof of Robotic Work.

Fabric does not reward people who merely are in possession of tokens or putting capital into digital currency; it rewards them based on actual robotic action on the network. Machines can record and be measured on chain tasks, maintenance events, compute contributions, and useful data that have been produced by robots.

Simply put, the network monitors actual machine productivity.

In case a robot fulfills a delivery pathway, conducts a survey, gathers valuable information, or provides computing capabilities, then that action will be a quantifiable input. When these contributions are confirmed, the system can compensate those contributions with the native token of the network.

This model modifies the mechanisms of incentives.

Passive participation is usually incentivized in traditional crypto networks. Fabric is concerned with the productive real-world activity. The token emissions are associated with machines that are useful in their work and not with the users who just lock the tokens in a contract.

To achieve this, the protocol notes a number of things:

Robotic identity
Task execution
Data contributions
Operational history

Such records will provide an open record of machine performance which can be verified by anybody in the network.

This is a steep change in the case of robotics.

Most robot fleets are now run within the closed systems of individual companies with performance data remaining within the companies. Those data are transported to a common infrastructure where productivity is able to be predicted and recognized publicly.

In case robots will be involved in a decentralized economy, the network must have a stable mechanism to quantify the value.
