Day Forty-One · The Five-Stride Laugh at the Hundred-Stride, The Hundred-Stride Laugh at Liquidation
Reading Mencius, there's a classic scene.
King Hui of Liang said: "I govern the country with all my heart and effort. When there’s a disaster in Henei, I relocate the people to Hedong; when Hedong is affected, I shift grain supplies there. Look at neighboring countries—they don’t work as hard as I do. Yet, the people in neighboring countries haven’t decreased, and my people haven’t increased. Why is that?"
Mencius said: "Your Majesty likes to fight, so let’s use war as an analogy. When the war drum sounds, swords clash, and soldiers abandon their armor and flee. Some run fifty steps and stop; others run a hundred steps and stop. The ones who run fifty steps laugh at the ones who run a hundred: ‘Haha, you coward!’ — Do you think that’s right, Your Majesty?"
King Hui of Liang said: "That’s not right. They’re all fleeing, just not as far as a hundred steps."
Mencius said: "Since Your Majesty understands this principle, don’t expect your people to be more numerous than those in neighboring countries."
Reading this, I laughed.
Isn’t this just like our crypto circle?
The fifty-step joke at the hundred-step: “Haha, you got liquidated, I still have my principal!”
The hundred-step joke at the two-hundred-step: “Haha, you went to zero, I still have a little left!”
The two-hundred-step joke at the three-hundred-step…
In the end, it’s all fleeing, all losing money—just some lose more, some lose less.
The fifty-step ones think they’re pretty awesome because they didn’t run a hundred steps;
The ones who didn’t get liquidated think they’re pretty awesome because they didn’t get liquidated;
The ones who lost 50% think they’re pretty awesome because they didn’t go to zero.
Mencius saw through this over two thousand years ago:
Don’t laugh at others; look at yourself—you’re also running.
But what Mencius didn’t say is:
The true winners are those who never even went to battle.
So what if we’ve gone in?
Just run a few fewer steps.
Those who run fifty steps, don’t laugh at those who run a hundred;
Those who aren’t liquidated, don’t laugh at those who are;
Those who aren’t losing today, don’t laugh at those who lost yesterday.
Recognize that you’re also running, only then can you stop.
Stop, and you can start heading back.
Day Forty-One, still at the poker table—that’s victory.
But don’t just laugh at others—check if your own feet are still trembling.
