Few things temper the joy of a cheap airline ticket like a hefty baggage charge.

It can now cost upwards of £40 to take your belongings on a short-haul flight. But in the face of few alternatives, most travellers reluctantly opt to pay up.

That was until one passenger decided that enough was enough.

Laura Poole, a public speaker and business coach based in Pontyclun, south Wales, opted to post her clothes ahead of a trip from Bristol to Dundee last week – and saved more than 90pc in the process.

Ms Poole revealed the trick in a viral Facebook video, first reported by Bristol Live.

In a Facebook post, she said: “I’m flying Bristol to Glasgow on Sunday. My flight cost £25, cabin baggage fees £30. That’s more than my flight! Can I afford baggage fees? Absolutely. Will I pay them? F*** no! On principle.”

Three days before her month-long business trip, she put more than half the clothes she needed in a parcel and dropped it at a nearby locker provided by courier service InPost.

The whole process cost her just £2.59, and her parcel was ready and waiting at a Tesco Express when she arrived at her hotel in Dundee on Feb 22.

She added: “My thought process is if anything goes wrong, or it doesn’t arrive in time, I’ve got time to buy new clothes. I do public speaking so I need to look good. Suit jackets, trousers, all sorts, I threw it all in, dresses as well.

“I have one less bag to carry. I did this at the end of last year too. It’s so good! I’m quietly protesting baggage fees.”

Budget carrier Ryanair can charge £14 for a small bag and £28.50 for a checked 10kg bag on domestic flights, rising to £31 and £34 on easyJet.

However, travellers can opt to post up to 15kg of their belongings – insured up to £50 – for between £1.99 and £3.99 with InPost. The parcel then arrives in three to five days at a locker of the sender’s choosing or someone’s home address.

The hack can also work on flights to France, with Royal Mail’s parcel service offering savings of up to £17.49.

EasyJet and InPost were approached for comment.
