IT Home, February 24 — Microsoft updated its official support documentation on February 19, acknowledging a bug in the classic Outlook desktop email client that causes the mouse cursor to suddenly disappear for some users during use.

Tech media BleepingComputer pointed out that the issue dates back two months, with multiple affected users reporting that the disappearance of the mouse cursor directly prevented them from locating targets, opening emails, or performing basic operations like copy and paste, causing the entire application to become unresponsive.

In the official support document, Microsoft explained the specific behavior of this bug. Although the mouse cursor visually disappears, the system still recognizes its position. When users hover the invisible cursor over the email list, the corresponding emails still change color.

Microsoft also confirmed that this vulnerability is not limited to Outlook; some users of OneNote and other Microsoft 365 applications (with a relatively smaller affected scope) have reported similar phenomena.

Microsoft explicitly stated that the core Outlook development team is currently investigating these issues in depth and promised to release an update as soon as more definitive information is available. To accelerate the analysis and identification of the vulnerability, Microsoft strongly recommends affected users take proactive steps.

Specifically, users should ask their organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator to submit support tickets directly to the official Outlook support team and upload system diagnostic log files to assist in extracting key error data.

IT Home cited a blog post stating that the official emergency provides three temporary solutions, though Microsoft has not yet announced a specific timeline for a complete fix:

First, affected users can try clicking on a random email in the email list when the cursor disappears, which may trigger the cursor to reappear.

Second, users can try switching the window to PowerPoint, clicking anywhere in an editable area, and then returning to the Outlook interface.

Microsoft added that if the first two quick methods do not work, users may need to restart their computers entirely, which theoretically can restore the mouse cursor display.
