Cheung Kong Industrial requests negotiations with Panama

Hong Kong-based Cheung Kong and Hutchison Whampoa Limited announced on the 19th that the company has requested negotiations with the Panamanian government regarding the continued operation of ports on both ends of the Panama Canal. Last month, Panama’s Supreme Court ruled that Cheung Kong Group’s holding of the operating rights for ports on both ends of the Panama Canal was unconstitutional. Subsequently, Panama announced that Denmark’s Maersk Shipping Group would take over the operation of the ports on both ends of the canal. Cheung Kong Group stated that it will take legal action in response. Alejandro Curucles, spokesperson for Cheung Kong’s subsidiary operating these two ports, said in an interview, “We request a roundtable meeting between Cheung Kong Group and representatives of the Panamanian government to seek a reasonable solution.” Curucles also stated that the company is willing to renegotiate all terms of the contract.
