Supreme People's Procuratorate: High incidence of copyright infringement cases in cultural and creative products, with well-known IPs like "Nezha" and "Pop Mart" being infringed upon
On February 24th, Liu Taizong, Deputy Director of the Intellectual Property Prosecution Department of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, stated that in recent years, many cultural and creative products have become popular in the cultural market. However, issues of infringement and piracy have also troubled industry development. Liu Taizong introduced that prosecutorial agencies are focusing on key areas and important works, strengthening intellectual property protection for well-known IPs, historical relics, time-honored brands, and intangible cultural heritage, and increasing efforts to protect cultural and creative products. From January to November 2025, prosecutorial agencies prosecuted a total of 64 cases involving intellectual property infringement related to cultural and creative products, including 20 cases involving “Nezha” and 13 cases involving “Pop Mart.” One case handled by the Dongyang Procuratorate in Zhejiang involved copyright infringement, where the defendant set up an illegal film website, streaming pirated blockbuster movies such as “Nezha Conquers the Demon” and “Fengshen Part Two: War in Xiqi” during the Spring Festival, profiting from over 130,000 pirated movies. The prosecution filed charges of copyright infringement, and the defendant was sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment and fined. (Xinhua News Agency)
