[Company Information]
Stepan Company was incorporated on February 19, 1959, under Delaware law. Its subsidiaries produce specialty and intermediate chemicals, which are sold to manufacturers and then made into various end products. The company has three reportable segments: Surfactants, Polymers, and Specialty Products. Surfactants are chemicals that affect the interaction between two surfaces; they can provide functions such as cleaning (removing soil from surfaces with water), wetting and foaming, dispersing, emulsifying (helping two different liquids mix), defoaming, viscosity modification, and biocides. Surfactants are the primary cleaning agents in detergents for laundry, dishwashing, carpets, fine fabrics, floors, and walls. They are also used in shampoos, body washes, conditioners, fabric softeners, toothpaste, cosmetics, and other personal care products. Commercial and industrial applications include emulsifiers for agricultural products, floor polishes, latex polymers for foams and coatings, wetting and foaming agents for wallboard manufacturing, surfactants for enhanced oil recovery, and biodiesel. Polymers, including polyols and phthalic anhydride, are used in various specialty polymers. Polyurethane polyols are used to produce rigid foam for insulation in the construction industry. The company is also a raw material source for paints, adhesives, sealants, and elastomers. Phthalic anhydride is used in polyester resins, alkyd resins, plasticizers, and applications in automotive, boating, and other consumer building materials and components, as well as internally in the company’s polyols. Specialty products are chemicals used in food, flavorings, nutritional supplements, and pharmaceutical applications.
