Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F) CEO Jim Farley has touted the automaker’s Universal EV Platform as the crucial element to offset and beat Chinese automakers’ increasing dominance in the global automotive industry.

Ford’s Push For Offsetting China

In a post on the social media platform X on Tuesday, the CEO hailed the Universal EV Platform as “one of the most audacious and important projects” in the automaker’s history. He also shared that Ford’s work on the UEV platform was an illustration of American innovation. “This is how we will compete and win against China and the rest of the world,” Farley concluded.

Ford recently shared a deep dive into the workings of the upcoming EV pickup truck, sharing that it would have an LFP battery made in Michigan at the company’s BlueOval Battery Park.

The truck will incorporate a “Unicasting” design, which essentially mirrors Tesla Inc.'s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Gigacasting structures, which use large Aluminum die-casts to make sections of the vehicle’s body, which would otherwise comprise several components. Ford is targeting a 2027 delivery timeline for the pickup.

Jim Farley Explores China Partnerships

The news comes as Farley has reportedly floated the idea of forming joint ventures with Chinese manufacturers to President Donald Trump, which would let the Chinese companies manufacture vehicles locally in the U.S. with American companies having a controlling stake in the venture. The idea was floated during last month’s Detroit Auto Show, reports suggest. Ford was reportedly in discussions with Xiaomi Corp (OTC:XIACY) (OTCC: XIACF), but has denied any such reports.

Farley has expressed both admiration for and caution against Chinese manufacturers, calling China-made EVs with advanced technologies “humbling” for other manufacturers.

BYD Surpasses Ford Sales

Meanwhile, BYD Co. Ltd. (OTC:BYDDY) (OTC:BYDDF) surpassed Ford’s global sales for the first time as the Chinese EV giant sold over 4.6 million units last year, more than Ford’s global wholesales, which declined nearly 2% and clocked in at around the 4.4 million unit mark.

Ford is also reportedly exploring partnerships with BYD to procure EV batteries for the company’s hybrid models in a pivot away from all-electric mobility, as Ford scrapped the production of the F-150 Lightning EV Pickup Truck.
