I was thinking about this on the way to work yesterday. As autonomous driving becomes more advanced in the future, imagine a scenario:
I'm driving the Horizon M99 alone, speeding along a cliffside road when suddenly a motorcycle rushes out from the small path by the cliff. On the motorcycle are a couple and a child, a total of three people. At this moment, the autonomous driving system has two options: 1. Hit the brakes and crash straight ahead, with a 2% chance of the driver dying and an 80% chance of the three people on the motorcycle dying; 2. Steer sharply to drive off the cliff, with a 99% chance of the driver dying but the others remaining unharmed. If you were an autonomous driving developer, how would you set the system?
