The Spanish Red Cross Implements Blockchain Platform for Transparent Distribution of Charitable Aid

Abstract generation in progress

The Spanish Red Cross has taken a significant step in digitizing its operations by developing an innovative project called RedChain. This platform aims to transform the entire process chain: from the moment donations are received to the final distribution of aid to end beneficiaries. The system was developed with the support of BLOOCK and Billions Network, which provided its technological foundation.

How the distribution system works at the Red Cross

RedChain is based on cryptographic ERC-20 tokens deployed on the Ethereum network. These digital units completely replace traditional paper vouchers and prepaid cards previously used for aid distribution. Beneficiaries can now make payments at partner merchants by simply scanning QR codes directly from their mobile digital wallets.

The system architecture follows a hybrid data storage principle. All confidential information about beneficiaries and their personal records remains within the secure infrastructure of the Spanish Red Cross. The public Ethereum blockchain is used solely for technical purposes: to verify cryptographic transaction hashes, record precise timestamps, and create irrefutable proof of data integrity.

Balancing transparency and privacy in charitable activities

This two-tiered approach allows for achieving two strategic goals simultaneously. On one hand, the Red Cross gains full transparency of financial flows: donors and oversight bodies can track how each donation moves through the system and reaches the final recipient. On the other hand, the confidentiality and dignity of aid recipients are fully protected by storing personal data within the organization’s closed system.

Partnership of technology companies in the implementation of the Red Cross project

The success of RedChain demonstrates the growing interest of traditional charitable organizations in the capabilities of distributed ledger technology. BLOOCK and Billions Network, which contributed technically to its development, confirm that blockchain solutions are becoming tools capable of increasing the efficiency and reliability of social institutions’ work. The Spanish Red Cross, by implementing this project, shows the humanitarian sector’s readiness to adopt modern technologies to improve service delivery.
