According to blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, the Central Bank of Iran allegedly purchased USDT worth $507 million, with most of these purchases carried out last year.
Elliptic identified a cryptocurrency wallet linked to the Central Bank of Iran that was used to purchase USDT, suggesting direct central bank intervention. The firm emphasized that it only reviewed verified wallets, and the actual value could be higher than $507 million.
According to Elliptic’s findings, Iran used USDT to support and maintain the value of its official currency, the rial, and to facilitate payments in international trade. The Iranian Central Bank made USDT purchases twice last year in April and May. A large portion of the acquired USDT was transferred to Nobitex, Iran’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, where it was converted into other assets via cross-chain bridges. This activity continued through the end of last year.
In a separate report, the Washington Post claimed that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps has been conducting approximately $1 billion worth of cryptocurrency transactions since 2023 using two cryptocurrency exchanges registered in the United Kingdom, with the majority of these transactions denominated in USDT.
