Commercial Deposits Finally Go on the Blockchain

The most conservative sector in the financial world is changing. While real-world assets(RWA) have long been appearing on public blockchains, they have mainly been limited to tokenized government bonds, money market funds, and structured investment products. Commercial bank deposits—funds that are both the most critical and heavily regulated in the financial system—have always been confined within closed banking networks.

That boundary was broken in December 2025. Morgan Stanley launched JPMD, a bank deposit-based token product, onto the Ethereum layer 2 network, moving it into the actual operational phase. Unlike previous tests conducted only on internal ledgers or approved closed networks, JPMD now supports real institutional-level payment activities on a public blockchain.

From Closed to Open

This move is more than just a technological upgrade. It signals that financial institutions are beginning to accept blockchain not merely as an experimental tool but as a real operational infrastructure. Along with various digital assets including MONY, the line between traditional finance and blockchain is blurring.

While whitelist-based restrictions still exist, it is significant that institutional investors will now experience fund transfers via public blockchains. This demonstrates that the RWA market is becoming not just a trend but the future of financial infrastructure.

The Beginning of Change

The migration of bank deposits onto the blockchain marks the first major instance of applying blockchain’s inherent advantages—such as payment efficiency, transparency, and 24/7 trading—to traditional finance. If JPMD’s public blockchain operation proves successful, more financial institutions are expected to follow.
