To be honest, I feel a bit envious. Back then, my school didn't hold a coming of age ceremony for us. My 18th birthday was also spent hurriedly in the sea of questions during my senior year of high school. I was living on campus, my parents were out of town, and they weren't around. I didn't tell any of my classmates either. At noon, I secretly borrowed a day student’s pass to sneak out of school, ate a bowl of my favorite claypot rice from high school, and really wished time could slow down a bit. However, my 18th birthday also had a small surprise. That evening, after evening self-study, it was already 22:30, just over an hour before my birthday ended. A junior girl in the second year of high school, who usually bought me water and snacks during PE class but we weren’t close (I’ve always suspected she’s gay😂), somehow found out my birthday. She ran to my dorm with a cake right after evening self-study. We took advantage of a 10-minute break in the washroom, hurriedly sang the birthday song before lights out, and shared the cake.

It wasn’t a perfect 18th birthday, but with the cake, it was enough to satisfy me.
