Vermilion Energy Divests Major Coelacanth Stake, Reduces Ownership Below 15%

Vermilion Energy Inc. (VET, VET.TO) has completed a significant share disposal, offloading 30 million common shares of Coelacanth Energy Inc. through a transaction valued at $22.80 million. The shares were placed at $0.76 per unit, a move that represents more than 2% of Coelacanth’s total issued and outstanding equity.

The divestiture marks a notable shift in Vermilion’s strategic positioning within Coelacanth. Prior to this transaction, Vermilion maintained a commanding stake of 110.18 million common shares, equating to approximately 20.7% ownership and control of the company. This represented a significant influence over Coelacanth’s operations and governance.

Following the completion of the share sale, Vermilion’s ownership footprint in Coelacanth has contracted substantially. The energy company now holds 80.18 million common shares, bringing its aggregate stake down to approximately 15.0% of Coelacanth’s issued and outstanding common shares. This reduction effectively places Vermilion below the threshold that typically triggers enhanced regulatory scrutiny and disclosure requirements in many jurisdictions.

The transaction underscores potential shifts in investment strategy or capital reallocation priorities within Vermilion’s portfolio. Whether this divestiture signals a broader pivot away from Coelacanth or represents opportunistic profit-taking remains a matter for market participants to evaluate based on broader business fundamentals and market conditions.
