At 27 years old, Zhang Wen was involved in an incident last night at Taipei Main Station, where he threw smoke bombs and randomly injured people in the Eslite Department Store Nanjing West area near Zhongshan Station. He is suspected to have fallen from a building and committed suicide by jumping, resulting in his OHCA (out-of-hospital cardiac arrest). He was rushed to Cathay General Hospital but was pronounced dead at 7:42 p.m.
The entire incident resulted in 4 deaths and 6 injuries, with the victims receiving emergency treatment in hospitals.
The suspect, Zhang Yuan, was charged with obstructing military service. Due to a change of household registration that was not reported, the military summons could not be delivered. He was wanted for violating the Military Service Act since July this year.
Witnesses at the scene stated that the attacker, Zhang Yuan, was equipped professionally and acted brutally. At 5:24 p.m., near the core area of Taipei Main Station on the Bannan Line M7 and M8 exits, he launched a series of attacks using smoke bombs, gasoline bombs, and blades. A loud explosion and a strong, pungent smoke filled the area, causing panic and screams as people rushed outside.
He then proceeded to Zhongshan Station, where he randomly attacked 4 or 5 pedestrians, threw smoke bombs, and later entered the Eslite Nanjing West store, injuring people along the way with a long knife.
Zhang Wen finally fell from the 5th or 6th floor of the Eslite Nanjing West store. He was captured and subdued by police, then sent to the hospital. The hospital announced that he was dead by 8 p.m., after abandoning emergency treatment. The two-hour indiscriminate attack shocked the entire society.
