So John Karony, the former SafeMoon CEO, just got hit with a 100-month federal prison sentence. That's roughly 8 years and 4 months behind bars for orchestrating one of crypto's most notorious exit scams.

The sentencing went down on February 10th in the Eastern District of New York. John Karony was found guilty on three counts: conspiracy to commit securities fraud, wire fraud conspiracy, and money laundering conspiracy. The judge, Eric R. Komitee, didn't mince words calling it a 'massive fraud' - though honestly it read more like outright theft than your typical securities fraud.

Here's what went down. John Karony and his crew sold investors on SafeMoon with a bunch of lies. They claimed the liquidity pools were 'locked' and couldn't be touched, that there was no way they'd rugpull, that the tokens would only go toward legitimate business purposes. All complete BS. In reality, Karony and his co-conspirators had full access to those pools the entire time and systematically looted millions in tokens for themselves.

Even wilder - while publicly denying they held or traded SafeMoon, John Karony was constantly buying and selling the token, sometimes right at peak prices. Made himself millions in the process. Then he laundered it all through anonymous wallets and exchanges to cover his tracks.

The guy walked away with over $9 million in crypto before getting caught. Bought himself a $2.2 million house in Utah, multiple other properties, a $277,000 Audi R8, Teslas, custom trucks - basically flexed the whole time. His co-conspirator Thomas Smith already pleaded guilty and is waiting sentencing. The third guy, Kyle Nagy, is still in the wind.

Victims testified about how John Karony specifically convinced them SafeMoon was legit, how it destroyed their financial plans. One said they couldn't even afford to buy a house because of the loss. The defense tried the 'his brain was still developing at 25' angle, but the judge wasn't having it.

Karony's legal team wanted about a year, prosecutors pushed for 12 years. The judge landed on 100 months. Could've been way worse - maximum was 45 years. There's still a hearing coming up April 23rd for the money laundering count.
