A solo miner mined a Bitcoin block — with a 1 in 100,000 chance of success
On Thursday, April 9, a solo miner with a hash rate of only 70 TH/s managed to mine a Bitcoin block and receive a reward of $222 000.
CKpool developer Con Kolivas (Con Kolivas) shared details of this rare event.
The probability of such an event for a miner with similar power is approximately one in 100,000 per day, or once every 300 years, according to the developer.
According to blockchain explorer Mempool, the miner received a total of 3.128 BTC for mining block #944,306.
The reward consisted of a block subsidy of 3.125 BTC and transaction fees totaling 0.003 BTC.
The miner used CKpool solo mining software.
A power of 70 TH/s is comparable to a single Bitmain Antminer S17+ device from 2019.
According to Mempool, the lucky miner’s hash rate is about 0.0000069% of the total Bitcoin network hash rate.
Last week, another miner using CKpool in solo mode received about $210 000 for mining block #943,411.
This ended a 33-day period without successful finds in the CKpool.
At that time, the probability of finding a block for the miner was roughly one in 28,000 per day.
In September, a solo miner received a reward for a block of $350 000 — such success is believed to occur once every 100 years.
In December, another miner earned $285 000 — such a chance occurs once every 82 years.
Earlier, CoinShares analysts reported that the cost of mining 1 BTC for individual market participants exceeded $100 000.
According to their estimate, the share of mining revenue for large data centers (ЦОД) could fall from 85% to less than 20% by the end of the year.
