Norwegian Hydro: The Katallum aluminum smelter has decided to cease further capacity reductions.
On March 12, Norsk Hydro (Norwegian Hydro) issued an official statement saying that, due to the continued low level of Qatar’s natural gas supply, its joint venture-operated Qatalum electrolytic aluminum smelter (Qatalum) with Qatar Petroleum has decided to stop further production-capacity cuts and keep its existing aluminum capacity stable at about 60% operating levels. Qatalum’s annual capacity is 648,000 metric tons, and its current actual operating capacity is approximately 389,000 metric tons per year, which is reduced by about 259,000 metric tons per year compared with full production. At present, Norsk Hydro has not yet made any clear statement regarding the subsequent resumption of production capacity and a restart timeline; the specific starting milestones for the related restart work remain highly uncertain.
