Shanghai AI Lab Director Zhou Bowen: AI Development Shows Three Major Trends

Abstract generation in progress

Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Director and Chief Scientist Zhou Bowen discussed the three future development trends of AI at the China Development High-Level Forum 2026 annual meeting: the technological path shifting from “binary opposition” to “integration of general and specialized”; application capabilities moving from “solving problems” to “handling tasks”; and scientific discovery serving as the ultimate test of intelligence. He believes that from an application perspective, AI is transitioning from deterministic computation to uncertain reasoning, breaking through the boundaries of rules. The next stage of evolution will involve moving toward Fuzzy Tasks, characterized by open worlds, open boundaries, and results that are difficult to verify directly. All of this demands higher core capabilities from artificial intelligence, driving continuous iteration and upgrading. (Science and Technology Innovation Board Daily)
