The 2026 China International Clothing and Accessories Expo (Spring) was recently held in Shanghai. Walking through the exhibition, the reporter felt that China’s apparel industry is confidently navigating cycles with steady momentum. Three keywords outline the industry’s solid trajectory of stable growth amid changing circumstances.
Keyword One: Vertical Deep Cultivation
“A clothing company customizes a product line, hiring two or three embroidery technicians to sew buttonholes on suit lapels, creating personalized, handcrafted designs. This alone helps the company stand out in export markets amid homogeneous competition and opens new growth opportunities,” said Chen Dapeng, Vice Chairman of the China National Textile and Apparel Council and President of the China Fashion Association, during an interview.
This is a microcosm of vertical deep cultivation in the apparel industry. During interviews, the reporter found that the industry’s rapid growth often takes a “decade” as a measure, quietly accumulating strength and breaking through.
Some companies focus on fabric innovation and R&D, leading the industry with bio-based fibers and smart temperature-controlled fabrics; others establish barriers in niche segments like sports outdoor, new Chinese style, and light business attire; even more, industrial clusters connect upstream and downstream supply chains, forming a complete closed loop from yarn, weaving, dyeing, to finished garments.
Vertical deep cultivation allows the industry to shed low-quality competition, holding core technologies, proprietary processes, and stable supply chains in its own hands. This is the hard strength to resist market fluctuations and the confidence for industry upgrading.
Keyword Two: Rapid Response
“Ship within seven days, minimum order of 100 pieces,” “Custom group buying, quick turnaround for small orders”… At the exhibition, many companies showcased new flexible manufacturing “business cards.”
According to Zhang Lexiang, Chairman of Fanduiwei Apparel Co., Ltd., intelligent management systems assist decision-making, making each production step precise to the second, forming a single-piece flow production model. “For an order of 2,000 pieces of outdoor jackets, we can go from fabric sourcing to delivery in just two to three days.”
Rapid response is the ability to adapt to market changes, backed by digital and intelligent transformation across the entire supply chain. AI-assisted design shortens R&D cycles, smart cutting machines and flexible production lines improve efficiency, and supply chain data collaboration enables precise matching of demand and capacity.
Faced with personalized, scenario-based, rapidly iterative market demands, the industry no longer passively follows but proactively predicts, quickly responds, and flexibly adjusts. This ability to act fast and adapt to change helps China’s apparel supply chain maintain a competitive edge globally and allows enterprises to firmly grasp the initiative amid uncertainties.
Keyword Three: Cultural Confidence
On the display stands, modernized Chinese-style cuts blend traditional embroidery and patterns with contemporary fashion expressions. At the national style zone of the exhibition, many booths related to Chinese culture attract frequent crowds, with some even forming long queues.
“Chinese-style apparel has shifted from an emerging niche to a normalized category of fashion consumption,” said Chen Dapeng. He estimates that the market size of Chinese-style clothing has already reached about 300 billion yuan.
The rise of Chinese style marks the beginning of China’s apparel industry shifting from followership to innovation. From OEM and private label to original design, from imitation to cultural expression, Chinese fashion brands are no longer obsessed with external labels but are deeply cultivating local culture, transforming cultural heritage into design language, product value, and brand recognition.
According to a leader of a Chinese-style apparel company, today’s designs are increasingly everyday, integrating traditional elements into daily life. They also pay more attention to meticulous craftsmanship, with dedicated designers independently developing details like buttons and knot closures, ensuring accessories harmonize with garment patterns and overall style.
Today, clothing is more than a product; it is a form of cultural expression. “We need to promote the transformation of China’s apparel industry from manufacturing to cultural and creative industries,” Chen Dapeng said. This involves integrating modern lifestyles with the spiritual values of Chinese culture, building a fashion value system with Chinese characteristics, creating products and brands with high cultural connotations, and enhancing the industry’s value creation and fashion discourse power.
