Abstract generation in progress

The renewable energy sector in Africa is undergoing a significant transformation, with South Africa demonstrating its capability as a leading solar market on the continent. This momentum is driven by the massive expansion of utility-scale projects that are reshaping the regional energy landscape. The Global Solar Council (GSC) released a comprehensive analysis revealing that Africa’s solar industry growth dynamics are reaching unprecedented levels throughout 2024-2025.

Spectacular Solar Capacity Growth

Africa is expected to add approximately 4.5 gigawatts of new solar energy capacity during this period, reflecting an extraordinary increase of 54% compared to the previous year. This achievement surpasses the historic record set in 2023, indicating an acceleration in investment and renewable energy infrastructure development. This aggressive growth is fueled by a combination of factors: decreasing costs of solar panel technology, increasing awareness of energy sustainability, and government policy support across various African countries.

South Africa Leads, Followed by Nigeria and Egypt

In terms of installed capacity, South Africa maintains a dominant position with 1.6 gigawatts, significantly outpacing other African countries. Nigeria ranks second with 803 megawatts, while Egypt is third with 500 megawatts. South Africa’s advantage reflects ongoing investments in energy infrastructure, a mature utility market, and a rapidly growing distributed market for residential and commercial solar panels.

Ambitious Projections Through 2029

Based on GSC analysis, growth in this sector is expected to continue strongly. As both market segments—large-scale utility and distributed markets—develop in more African countries, the continent’s annual solar capacity is projected to exceed 33 gigawatts by 2029. This projection indicates a potential sixfold increase over the next five years. South Africa is expected to remain the backbone of this industry, continuously strengthening its position as Africa’s renewable energy hub.
