The rising popularity of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) has attracted not only investors but also scammers. Turkey is no exception, with increasing reports of crypto-related fraud. The latest alarming case comes from Ankara, where a trader lost 38 million Turkish liras. How the Scam Unfolded According to AA, a trader named B.A. was contacted by someone posing as an employee of a foreign cryptocurrency exchange. The scammer promised high returns on investments. B.A. was asked to deposit $250 as a trial, which he did. Shortly afterward, he was informed that his investment had yielded significant profits, and he was able to withdraw his funds. This built his trust, and he decided to invest larger amounts. Exploiting a Fake App B.A. subsequently transferred his funds into an app designed by the scammers to mimic a legitimate exchange platform. Reports reveal that during this process, the scammers infected his devices with spyware. They gained access to his phone, laptop, and tablet, allowing them to steal his login credentials for mobile banking and credit cards. Transferring Funds to Scammers’ Wallets The scammers then transferred all of B.A.'s funds into their cryptocurrency wallets. When B.A. accessed the fake app, he discovered that his accounts had been completely emptied. Total Loss: 38 Million Liras The trader immediately contacted his lawyer, who confirmed that his client had lost 38 million Turkish liras. This case serves as another warning for investors to exercise extreme caution when dealing with cryptocurrencies and to trust only verified platforms. Lessons for Investors Beware of unsolicited offers: Scammers often promise unrealistically high returns to gain trust.Use official apps: Never log in to unknown or suspicious applications.Protect your devices: Secure your devices against malware and spyware.Verify trustworthiness: Always thoroughly check platforms and individuals before investing. This incident highlights the critical importance of security in the cryptocurrency world and the risks of trusting unverified sources.
