Classic Championship Game: Trump Mocks Venezuela: Want to Be America's 51st State? Which Way Are Prediction Markets Leaning?

The 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) Championship will feature the United States against Venezuela. Former President Trump posted a sarcastic comment questioning whether Venezuela wants to become the 51st state of the U.S., casting politics over the event. Currently, the prediction market has surpassed $1.7 million in trading volume. Can Venezuela, making its first appearance in the finals, win?

WBC Classic Championship: USA vs. Venezuela

The 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) is reaching its climax, with the championship game between the United States and Venezuela. This highly anticipated USA-Venezuela showdown is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Taiwan time on March 18 (Wednesday) at LoanDepot Park in Miami, USA.

Starting Pitchers Announced: Venezuela Aims for First Title

The starting pitchers for both teams have been announced. USA head coach Mark DeRosa has declared 24-year-old Nolan McLean of the New York Mets as the starting pitcher.

McLean had an excellent season last year in MLB, posting a 2.06 ERA over 48 innings. He said he was born for this moment. Although he gave up 3 runs against Italy in the group stage, his strong control remains a key factor for the USA’s title defense.

The USA lineup is equally formidable, featuring players nicknamed “The Judge” Aaron Judge, Roman Anthony, Pete Crow-Armstrong, and Gunnar Henderson, each already hitting two home runs in the tournament.

On the Venezuela side, left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez of the Arizona Diamondbacks will start against the USA.

Venezuela showed resilience in the semifinals against Italy. Although Italy took an early lead, Venezuela scored three runs in the 7th inning with two outs, thanks to hits from Jackson Chourio, Ronald Acuña Jr., Maikel Garcia, and Luis Arráez, turning the game around.

This is Venezuela’s first appearance in the WBC final, and they are determined to win their first Classic trophy.

Tense US-Venezuela Political Tensions: Trump Taunts Venezuela Over Becoming the 51st State?

Beyond sports, the final is shrouded in political tension. According to The Daily Mail, after Venezuela defeated Italy, former President Trump posted a controversial comment on social media platform Truth Social.

While congratulating Venezuela’s victory, Trump sarcastically asked, “Venezuela has been on a roll lately. I wonder how this magic works? Does someone want to make it the 51st state?”

This comment stems from a previous incident two months ago, on January 3, when U.S. military conducted a targeted operation to capture Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

Trump previously expressed interest in making Canada the 51st U.S. state. His recent post targeting Venezuela is seen as a provocative move, challenging the country’s sovereignty after an attempted military overthrow of Maduro’s regime. Although the game is about glory on the field, the political undercurrents have heightened the sensitivity of this matchup to the highest level.
