Jackie Chan isn’t just a legend of action cinema—he’s a person whose personal story is as wild as his films. Digging a little deeper, you discover some truly incredible things about this guy.
Let’s start with what makes him unique: Jackie Chan has always insisted on doing his own stunts, which says a lot about his dedication. But there’s a price. While filming *Dragon Lord*, he fell from a 12-meter tree and smashed his skull, leaving a permanent bone cavity. It’s even said he showed this to his friends by letting them touch it with their fingers. More than 70 serious injuries in total over the course of his career. That’s insane.
But before becoming a star, Jackie Chan had a nightmare childhood. His father was a spy, his mother trafficked in opium, and at age 6, his parents sent him to a boarding school. He says they had hardly anything to eat, not enough clothes, and the training was brutal. It was exactly this suffering that pushed him to push himself further. By age 8, he was already acting in his first film.
The interesting thing is that Jackie Chan wasn’t just a stuntman and an actor. He was trained at the Beijing Opera Academy, where he learned acrobatics, martial arts, but also music and singing. He became a Peking opera actor. Even today, he still releases albums in multiple languages and speaks 8 languages fluently: Mandarin, Cantonese, English, German, Korean, Japanese, Thai, and even American Sign Language.
Now, the darker parts of his story. Early in his career, he had to make adult films out of financial necessity. In 1975, he starred in *Family Portrait*, a Hong Kong erotic film. He said about it: “Back then, I had to do anything to make a living. But it wasn’t a big deal—erotic films back then were more conservative than they are today.”
His success also caused problems. Chinese triads harassed him for years. At one point, Jackie Chan had had enough and is said to have confronted the mafia, armed and ready to use grenades if things got worse. The incident drew the attention of authorities.
On a personal level, it’s complicated. Jackie Chan left his first wife and their daughter Etta Ng after an affair. In 2017, Etta Ng publicly revealed that she was gay and homeless because of her homophobic parents. Her mother responded by saying that if she didn’t have money, she should go work like everyone else.
More recently, his son Jaycee Chan was arrested and sentenced to 6 months in prison for possession and trafficking of marijuana, as well as for having provided lodging for drug users. Jackie Chan, who has been an ambassador for fighting drugs since 2009, had to issue public apologies. He said that Jaycee Chan wouldn’t inherit his fortune: “If he has the ability, he can earn money on his own. If he doesn’t have the ability, he’ll only waste my money.”
What’s crazy is that Jackie Chan holds two Guinness World Records: the most stunts performed by a living actor and the most successful martial arts film actor. He even set a personal record by taking on 15 different roles in a single film, including director, producer, actor, composer, art director, and many others.
In the end, Jackie Chan is much more than a cinema legend. He’s someone who has gone through unimaginable trials, made difficult choices, and despite everything, left an indelible mark on global cinema. His story is a reminder that even the biggest heroes have shadows and regrets.
