basically hopium describes those investors (or maybe us sometimes?) who are convinced a dead project still has a shot at mooning, even though there's zero evidence for it. you're just... hopeful. blindly hopeful. the hopium meaning in crypto context is pretty much calling out that kind of denial.

funny thing is people confuse it with copium, but they're actually different. copium is more like coping with bad news - you're dealing with something that already happened. hopium is pure unfounded optimism about the future. one's a coping mechanism, the other is just... hope without facts backing it up.

the term definitely has that mocking vibe to it, which is why you see it used sarcastically. 'wen btc 100k #hopium' type posts. it's basically calling yourself out for being unrealistic, or calling others out for it.
