U.S. Treasury Secretary Wants to Resign Due to "Ridiculous Tariffs"? Trump's Trade Policy Causes Cabinet Turmoil
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessen is considering resigning because he is unhappy with the Trump administration's "reciprocal tariffs" policy. According to MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle's April 4 revelations on the "Good Morning, Joe" TV show, Bessant is extremely disappointed with the Trump administration's trade policy, arguing that its "ridiculous tariff algorithm" seriously violates the laws of the market, and has even been ridiculed by critics as a "kindergarten-level understanding of international trade."
Lü Le revealed that Besant appeared out of place within the Trump administration, not only failing to enter the president's core decision-making circle, but also having his policy suggestions repeatedly ignored. Sources say that Besant is actively looking for a "way out" and is even considering switching to the Federal Reserve to avoid further damage to his market credibility.
It is worth noting that Bessent has been a staunch supporter of Trump in the past. He had advised Trump on economic policies during the 2024 election and personally spent $3 million to support his campaign. Trump has also praised him as "one of the greatest analysts on Wall Street." However, the introduction of the "reciprocal tariff" policy has clearly exceeded Bessent's tolerance.
On April 2, Trump signed an executive order announcing a 10% "minimum benchmark tariff" on all trading partners and higher rates on countries with large trade deficits. This policy immediately triggered a global backlash, with multiple countries threatening retaliatory measures, resulting in a continuous plunge in U.S. stocks, and the Nasdaq index even falling into a technical bear market.
In the face of strong opposition from the international community, Bessent attempted to ease the situation, calling on countries to "not retaliate," stating that taking countermeasures would only lead to an escalation of the trade war. However, this statement instead drew widespread criticism, with netizens sarcastically commenting: "This is like a bully hitting someone and then saying 'don't fight back.'"
As of now, Besant himself has not publicly responded to the resignation rumors. However, if he ultimately chooses to leave, he will become another senior official within the Trump administration to resign due to policy differences, further intensifying market concerns about the stability of U.S. economic policy.
