On April 27, North Carolina Republican Senator Thom Tillis announced on Sunday that he would support Kevin Warsh’s confirmation as Federal Reserve Chair, thereby removing the last significant obstacle for Trump’s chosen successor to Powell. Tillis had refused to vote in favor of Warsh for months, stating that he would not advance any Fed nominee’s confirmation as long as the Justice Department’s criminal investigation into Powell was ongoing, calling the investigation an attack on the independence of the central bank. However, the investigation appears to have concluded last Friday.
