White House Correspondents' Dinner scare, Secret Service quickly evacuates Trump, and subdues 31-year-old California gunman
White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner (WHCA) held at the Hilton Hotel in Washington experienced an unexpected shooting incident. President Trump was evacuated urgently under Secret Service protection, with the suspect identified as 31-year-old California man Cole Allen.
Gunfire erupts at Washington Hilton Hotel, casting shadows of Reagan assassination
On the evening of April 25, 2026, U.S. time, what should have been an annual celebration among Washington’s political and media circles—the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner (WHCA Dinner)—suddenly turned into a tense violent conflict. Around 8:30 p.m., multiple gunshots were fired in the basement banquet hall of the Washington Hilton Hotel, just after the dinner’s welcome speech and during the first course of the meal. According to reporters and witnesses on the scene, at least five muffled yet loud bursts were heard from the back of the venue, and the lively conversations were immediately replaced by screams of panic.
U.S. President Donald Trump was seated at the main table on stage at the time, with First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance nearby. Within seconds of the gunfire, Secret Service agents responded swiftly, rushing onto the stage to encircle the President, then escorting Trump and his entourage out of the scene.
