The African Union welcomes China and Pakistan's initiative to restore peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East regions.
The African Union Commission issued a statement on the 3rd, welcoming China’s and Pakistan’s five-point initiative aimed at restoring peace and stability in the Gulf and Middle East regions. AU Commission Chairperson Youssef pointed out in the statement that the initiative makes timely and constructive contributions to easing regional tensions and promoting political and diplomatic processes. The initiative emphasizes an immediate halt to hostilities, protection of civilians, adherence to international humanitarian law, and maintenance of maritime security, reflecting the key elements needed to manage the current crisis. Youssef also reiterated his “deep concern” over the ongoing escalation of the situation in the Gulf and Middle East regions. He believes that the impact of the conflict has affected the world, including energy supply chains, food systems, and economic stability—especially for Africa, as the continent already faces multiple challenges. Youssef called on all parties to exercise restraint, de-escalate the situation as soon as possible, and maintain ongoing contact, emphasizing that all parties must act fully in accordance with the UN Charter and international law to uphold international peace and security.
