On the 13th local time, the President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Bärböck, confirmed at a press conference held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, that the number of candidates for the next United Nations Secretary-General has increased to five. Virginia Gamba, the former United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, has been nominated by the Maldives. The other four candidates include: Michelle Bachelet, the former President of Chile, nominated by Chile, Brazil, and Mexico; Rafael Grossi, the current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, nominated by Argentina; Macky Sall, the former President of Senegal nominated by Burundi, the current rotating chair of the African Union; and Rebeca Grynspan, the former Vice President of Costa Rica, nominated by Costa Rica.
