U.S. NATO Ambassador Whitaker said in an interview with the U.S. News Agency on the 1st that President Trump is reevaluating NATO’s value to the United States and questioning whether the alliance is still a “mutually beneficial relationship.”
Regarding the international meeting this week called by the UK to discuss restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Whitaker said, “Now there is a need to deploy frigates in the Strait of Hormuz,” “The U.S. needs to receive a clear signal from allies, not just verbal commitments, but reflected in actual capabilities and concrete actions, because that is truly crucial.”
He said that France, Italy, and Spain recently refused to allow U.S. military aircraft to use their bases or airspace for military operations related to Iran, highlighting disagreements.
Whitaker also said that the U.S. is reevaluating whether to continue providing broad support to Europe on Ukraine issues.
The UK’s Daily Telegraph published an interview with Trump on the 1st, stating that after NATO allies refused to help combat Iran, Trump is “seriously considering” withdrawing the U.S. from NATO.
