Editor’s note: In the narrative of the crypto industry, “asymmetric returns” are almost a default belief—using limited downside to seek explosive upside. Joe McCann tried to turn this logic into a business. He founded Asymmetric, betting on both primary investments and secondary trading, rapidly expanding its scale and influence during the market rebound window in 2024: assets doubling, trades succeeding, personal brand and fund performance reinforcing each other—everything seemed to prove this model was valid.

But the other side of the cycle quickly revealed itself. When the market cooled and liquidity shrank, high-volatility assets and narrative-driven strategies began to fail. By 2025, the fund experienced significant drawdowns, internal turmoil, repeated strategies, and investor confidence eroding—“asymmetry” began to reveal another layer of meaning—while returns were amplified, risks were also delayed and magnified.

And just as all this was still unresolved, an unexpected event in Tanzania completely interrupted this market narrative. McCann’s fiancée, influencer Ashly Robinson, suddenly died while on vacation. The incident is still under investigation, but it has quickly evolved from a personal tragedy into a public controversy—passport confiscation, ongoing investigation, family doubts—shifting the discussion from fund performance to a more complex reality.

When individuals, capital, and narratives are tightly intertwined, any loss of control in one link can rapidly spread beyond the market itself.

Joe McCann entered the crypto trading space and, in just two years, seemed to have achieved great success. In 2022, his fund Asymmetric raised capital from institutions like Marc Andreessen and Circle; during the crypto boom that coincided with Donald Trump’s return to the White House, the fund’s value nearly doubled.

But then, the situation started to spiral out of control.

By July 2025, Asymmetric’s liquidity fund had suffered substantial losses, prompting McCann to steer investors toward a new project, which ultimately failed to meet expectations. Earlier this month, reports emerged that McCann’s fiancée, influencer Ashly Robinson, died while vacationing at a luxury resort in Tanzania with him. Robinson’s death was initially deemed a suicide, but reports indicate that local police have confiscated McCann’s passport and are questioning him as part of a continuing investigation.

McCann and a young influencer

Robinson was active on social media under the name Ashlee Jenae. According to a post on her Instagram, she and McCann started dating in November 2024. At that time, McCann’s crypto company was at its peak. Despite multiple requests for comment via text, McCann did not respond.

McCann was previously married in 2018 to Shea Jackson, a marketing professional ten years his junior. They eventually separated. Two founders who had received investment from Asymmetric told Fortune that some of McCann’s shares had been transferred to Jackson’s name. Jackson also did not respond to requests for comment.

Additionally, according to McCann’s posts on X (formerly Twitter), he has a daughter.

McCann began attending various crypto industry events with Robinson, who is 15 years younger than him, and she also started frequently posting photos of the two together on social media. Her social media accounts show that they traveled to multiple exotic destinations, and she gradually embraced the so-called “soft life”—a social media trend emphasizing self-care and a relaxed lifestyle.

Her last Instagram post read: “This chapter at 31, I am exactly where I should be,” with a photo of her feeding a giraffe in Tanzania. Two days earlier, the 30-year-old influencer posted a video showing 45-year-old McCann proposing to her, with a lion slowly approaching in the background.

According to local police reports, the couple checked into the Zuri Zanzibar luxury hotel in Zanzibar on April 6. After an argument, hotel staff reportedly moved McCann to a different room from Robinson. On April 8, a hotel staff member found her unconscious in her room and she was rushed to the hospital. Tanzanian police ruled her death a suicide.

The police report also states that although McCann has not been formally accused of misconduct, his passport has been confiscated by local authorities and he is under investigation. Robinson’s family issued a statement expressing suspicion about her death.

Crypto industry collapse

Joe McCann has always been known for “doing things his own way.”

Born in 1980, he studied philosophy at Portland State University, with a particular fondness for Nietzsche and Schopenhauer. His first decade in his career was spent in tech and finance, eventually becoming CEO of a software company, which he helped sell in 2019. He later worked at Microsoft before founding a crypto fund. In a 2024 podcast, he mentioned wanting to “do things a bit differently this time.”

McCann built Asymmetric (which has both venture capital and secondary market arms) into a “financially prudent, culturally avant-garde” institution. He recounted in the podcast that before founding the company, he had been a DJ, hosted rave parties, operated a record label, and co-founded a clothing brand with his brother; he also served as CTO of a top New York advertising agency. He viewed this long-term engagement with “human creativity” as a unique advantage in crypto investing.

In multiple interviews, McCann boasted about earning remarkable returns on a fleeting meme coin called BONK. He also sought to boost his “cultural influence” through a relationship with rapper Iggy Azalea, and helped promote her failed crypto project. Additionally, he briefly launched a series of Asymmetric-themed merchandise and released a high-quality, costly promotional video.

For a time, all this translated into substantial returns. A person familiar with the company’s finances told Fortune that in 2024, Asymmetric’s liquidity portfolio grew from about $195 million to $395 million. Still, this performance lagged behind Bitcoin’s 121% surge that year.

Despite impressive paper gains, internal tensions simmered within Asymmetric. Insiders said that co-founder and key trader Chris Cecere left the company in 2024 amid its rapid growth. Cecere declined to comment.

By 2025, as performance came under pressure, McCann shifted toward a new crypto trend—“digital asset treasury companies,” a model popularized by Michael Saylor, with his company Strategy being a notable example. In a July investor letter, McCann stated that due to “market environment changes,” Asymmetric would abandon active trading and instead focus on building a Solana asset reserve.

The company had planned an investor presentation on July 22, but on the same day, an unhappy limited partner disclosed on X that the fund had lost nearly 80% of its value this year. Soon after, the Solana strategy was also quickly halted. A former investor told Fortune that during the liquidation of the liquidity fund, they recovered less than their initial principal.

Currently, Asymmetric’s website only lists two venture funds and a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for investing in Circle equity. The “team” page has been taken down, and a general partner declined to comment.

Even as the company faces difficulties, McCann remains active in crypto, frequently posting on his X account with over 100k followers. In March, crypto services firm MG Stover acquired his data analytics company, Asymmetric Information.

But after the tragic trip to Tanzania, McCann’s problems are clearly beyond investment gains and losses. His fiancée’s family is demanding further explanation of her death, and he remains stranded in Tanzania.

Ironically, in a 2024 podcast during his career’s peak, McCann summarized a key risk traders must beware of—“zeroing out.” “Pursuing asymmetric returns—where upside is huge and downside limited—must be combined with avoiding total failure,” he said.

He knows all too well what “not losing everything” means, but his story ultimately took a turn toward “losing control.”
