Tariff refunds face obstacles; U.S. Customs states they cannot comply with orders to stop calculating emergency tariffs.
On Friday local time, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official informed a federal judge that they could not comply with the court’s order to stop a key step in the tariff payment process. After the Supreme Court overturned most of the president’s global tariff policies, U.S. District Court Judge Richard Eaton of the United States Federal Trade Court in New York issued an order on Wednesday requiring an end to the calculation of the emergency tariffs imposed by Trump in importers’ customs documents. The move is intended to streamline future tax refund procedures. The judge also questioned the government, asking why related operations had not been stopped, given that the Supreme Court ruled last month that these tariffs are illegal. (First Financial)
