Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SRD grant details, especially when they need to change their bank account. I went through this recently and wanted to share what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're getting the SRD R370, the good news is it's all online now. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a link via SMS. That link takes you to where you can update your bank account details. Pretty straightforward once you know where to look. Just remember the account has to be in your name exactly as it shows on your ID—they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for the bank to verify everything.
Now if you're on a permanent grant like disability or old age, it's a different story. You actually have to go to a SASSA office in person. Bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement from the last three months works), and fill out their payment method change form. The staff will handle it from there, but it can take up to 21 days. Pro tip: submit it before the 15th of the month or you'll wait another cycle.
For your phone number, same deal—SRD grants let you update it online through their contact details portal, but permanent grants need an in-person visit or you can call their helpline. Honestly, going in person is usually faster if you can spare the time. Anyone else had issues with this process?
