British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with visiting Syrian Interim Government President Ahmed Shara at 10 Downing Street in the Prime Minister’s Office on March 31. The two sides said it is necessary to develop practical plans to promote the restoration of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The UK government said in a statement that both sides believe the Strait of Hormuz’s long-term closure has caused serious economic impacts, and that the UK and Syria will work together with relevant parties to restore navigation. The two sides also believe that efforts should be made to prevent further escalation of tensions in the Middle East and to help the region return to stability. The two sides also exchanged views on issues including the situation in the Middle East, counter-terrorism cooperation, immigration, and Syria’s reconstruction. Starmer said he hopes the two sides will further strengthen cooperation on illegal immigration, focusing in particular on areas such as repatriation mechanisms, border security, and cracking down on human trafficking networks.
