NHK Tehran Branch Chief Released on Bail After Iran Detention
Kyodo News, citing relevant Japanese government sources, reported that the head of NHK’s international branch’s Tehran office in Iran, who was detained by local authorities in January, was granted bail. Although he is temporarily not allowed to leave Iran, he has been kept under protection in Tehran, the country’s capital, and is in good health. According to the relevant sources, he has been charged with security-related offenses and may face trial in the future. The Japanese government has requested that the Iranian government allow him to return home.
At a press conference, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said that it has been confirmed that a detained Japanese national—whose real name has not been disclosed—was granted bail on Monday local time. Japan’s ambassador to Iran met with him and confirmed his health condition.
The report said that after the U.S. and Israel carried out attacks on Iran, Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi made three phone calls in succession to Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to demand his release. Including this NHK branch head, there are two Japanese nationals detained in Iran, one of whom had previously been released and returned to Japan in March.
