973k vehicles! SAIC Motor Group's Q1 sales report

On April 3, SAIC Motor released its sales quick report for March 2026 and the first quarter of 2026. The data shows that in March 2026, SAIC Motor’s total vehicle sales were 375.9k units, down 2.56% year over year. Among them, new energy vehicle sales were 113.1k units, down 10.03% year over year; export sales were 121.3k units, up 47.37% year over year.

As of the end of March, in the first quarter of 2026, SAIC Motor’s cumulative sales were 972.7k units, up 2.95% year over year. Among them, new energy vehicle sales were 269.8k units, down 1.15% year over year; export sales were 324.9k units, up 48.34% year over year.

By sub-brand, in the joint-venture brands segment, SAIC Volkswagen sold 68k units in March, down 24.44% year over year; cumulative sales in the first quarter were 189.9k units, down 16.75% year over year. SAIC General Motors sold 50k units, up 14.15% year over year; cumulative sales in the first quarter were 121.3k units, up 11.29% year over year. In addition, SAIC-GM-Wuling sold 121.7k units, down 17.78% year over year; cumulative sales in the first quarter were 327.7k units, up 7.16% year over year.

For the independent brands, at present SAIC Motor’s independent brand lineup consists of three brands: MG, Roewe, and Zhiji Automobile. The data shows that in March, SAIC passenger vehicle sales were 91.2k units, up 34.25% year over year; cumulative sales in the first quarter were 230k units, up 40.41% year over year. SAIC Maxus sold 26k units in March, up 30.02% year over year; cumulative sales in the first quarter were 59.3k units, up 14.26% year over year. In addition, as a sales contributor in the pure-electric market, Zhiji Automobile sold 7,187 units in March, up 131.84% year over year; cumulative sales in the first quarter were 13.9k units, up 96.89% year over year. According to the plan, within this year Zhiji Automobile will launch a new model—Zhiji LS8. The new vehicle is positioned as a midsize-to-large SUV, with dimensions of 5085/2000/1817 (1807) mm, and a wheelbase of 3060 mm. In terms of powertrain, it uses a plug-in extended-range hybrid power system, featuring a 1.5T engine with a model code 15FNE produced by SAIC Group as the range-extender, with a maximum power output of 114 kW.

Overall, although SAIC Motor’s total vehicle sales in March saw a slight decline, as seen from the first quarter of this year, SAIC Motor still achieved 2.95% growth to 13.9k units. Based on current sales figures, joint-venture brands remain SAIC Motor’s main source of sales. However, with the rapid development of new energy vehicles and SAIC Motor’s broader product deployment across brands such as SAIC passenger vehicles and Zhiji Automobile, SAIC Motor is moving from relying on joint-venture brands toward a transition to independent brands.

According to reports, on April 3, SAIC Motor said on an interactive platform that starting this year, the company will gradually roll out mass-produced models equipped with semi-solid-state batteries across different brands; the specific arrangements will be based on the information released by each brand. SAIC Motor aims to achieve full-year total vehicle sales of 5.0 million units, with operating total revenue exceeding 700 billion yuan, and operating costs of around 630 billion yuan. For reference, in 2025 SAIC Motor recorded operating revenue of 656.24 billion yuan, up 4.6%; attributable net profit to the parent company was 10.11 billion yuan, up 506.45%; and profit attributable to the parent company after deducting non-recurring items was 7.42 billion yuan, turning from loss to profit year over year. In terms of sales, in 2025 SAIC Motor’s total vehicle sales were 1.5T units, up 12.3%. Among them, independent brand sales were 972.7k units, up 21.6%; new energy vehicle sales were 4.51M units, up 33.1%.
