Sino-American Fusion Debuts at Zhongguancun Forum Showcasing Major Achievements in Fusion R&D Innovation
Source: Guangming Net
Recently, the annual meeting of the Zhongguancun Forum, themed “Deep Integration of Technological Innovation and Industrial Innovation,” was held in Beijing. The Zhongguancun Forum focuses on fostering new quality productive forces and showcases cutting-edge technology breakthroughs and industrial integration achievements to the world. As a representative company that was among the earliest in China to explore the commercialization of fusion energy and is in the first tier in fusion research, Newao Group brought its commercial fusion innovation results to the forum’s permanent exhibition, fully demonstrating its leading frontier innovative strength and engineering implementation capabilities in the field of controllable nuclear fusion. It also creates a favorable opportunity to deepen industry collaboration and support the progress of fusion commercialization.
Among them, in the forum’s Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development and green advanced energy exhibition areas, Newao Group showcased, respectively, the spherical tokamak-halo hydrogen-boron fusion experimental device “Xuanlong-50U” (model), with globally leading parameters, and the next-generation hydrogen-boron fusion device “Helong-2” (model), which is set to begin construction, presenting in a comprehensive manner its phased innovative achievements in the field of controllable nuclear fusion research.

Within the exhibition area, Newao’s independently developed hydrogen-boron fusion devices “Xuanlong-50U” (model) and “Helong-2” (model) became the focus of attention for experts and scholars attending the event. They stopped to observe on site and engaged in in-depth exchanges and discussions around the technical route and development prospects of hydrogen-boron fusion.
Both generations of devices fully demonstrate Newao’s core competitive strength in fusion physics, engineering, and experiments. Among them, the “Xuanlong-50U” device is China’s first and only mega-amp-class spherical halo device. In the past year, it has achieved multiple internationally recognized breakthroughs in succession: in April 2025, it achieved the world’s first mega-amp-class hydrogen-boron plasma discharge with an electron temperature of forty million degrees; in May, the ring-shaped field coil achieved stable current of 150kA, reaching a second-scale 1.2T strong central magnetic field; in December, it achieved the world’s first hydrogen-boron plasma high-confinement-mode discharge; and in January 2026, it achieved an electron temperature of 100 million degrees, with core capabilities such as heating and control stepping up to internationally advanced levels.
Based on the continued breakthroughs of the “Xuanlong” series, Newao has officially started construction of the next-generation hydrogen-boron fusion device “Helong-2.” “Helong-2” is not only the flagship device exploring high-parameter strong-field spherical halo fusion, but also the core experimental platform for Newao’s commercialization path for spherical halo hydrogen-boron fusion. After the device is completed, it will push plasma parameters to higher dimensions, focus on addressing the scientific questions and key technical bottlenecks across the full chain of spherical halo hydrogen-boron fusion, and further verify the scientific feasibility of hydrogen-boron fusion. At present, “Helong-2” has completed physical design and engineering design, and is expected to be built and put into operation by the end of 2027. From the ongoing technology breakthroughs of “Xuanlong 50-U” to the forward-looking layout exploration of “Helong-2,” Newao is advancing step by step toward “lighting the first lamp for hydrogen-boron fusion.”

Deepening industry-academia-research cooperation and accelerating breakthroughs in hydrogen-boron fusion technology
Newao’s continued relentless efforts in fusion technology cannot be achieved without coordinated efforts across technology, talent, and industrial resources. To further speed up the development of fusion technology R&D, Newao has built an end-to-end fusion technology innovation ecosystem of “deep integration of industry, academia, and research + international collaborative innovation,” bringing together multiple parties to tackle fusion core technologies.
While independently developing fusion experimental devices, Newao continues to deepen its fusion collaboration ecosystem centered on the integration of industry, academia, and research. For example, it has jointly established with Peking University the “Peking University–Newao Technology Innovation Center,” and with Tianjin University it has jointly built the “Tianjin University–Newao Cognitive Science Innovation Center Fusion Intelligent Laboratory,” among others. These efforts efficiently connect research talent and core technology resources, promoting deep integration of cutting-edge theoretical research at universities with enterprise engineering technology R&D. They achieve complementary advantages between industry, academia, and research, and coordinated development, injecting a steady stream of scientific research momentum into fusion technology innovation.
In addition, Newao continuously expands its international ecosystem cooperation in the field of fusion. As a member of the national controllable nuclear fusion innovation joint alliance and China’s first private enterprise to join the International Energy Agency’s International Tokamak Physics Project, Newao has already built a global collaborative innovation network covering 11 countries across four continents and 75 top-tier institutions. Through cross-border cooperation and joint tackling, it actively addresses technical challenges in the fusion device R&D process and helps accelerate the development of fusion technology worldwide.
With ongoing innovation based on fusion devices and coordinated efforts across industry, academia, research, and internationally, Newao is moving forward steadily along the path of innovative R&D in fusion energy. At present, the global energy transition has entered a critical stage. With an open posture, Newao will bring together global resources, continuously improve its fusion R&D cooperation ecosystem, and accelerate the development of fusion technology R&D and commercialization. This will showcase China’s wisdom and the responsibility and commitment of private enterprises for the global green energy transition. (Zhang Wei)
