Strait of Hormuz shipping rises to multi-week high, more passages approved

Abstract generation in progress

As more countries appear to have reached safe-passage arrangements with Iran, shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has risen to the highest level since the beginning of the war.

During the weekend, 21 vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz. Governments facing tighter energy supplies are seeking through negotiations to pull ships, cargo, and crews out of the Persian Gulf, strengthening Iran’s control over the Strait. This is the highest two-day transit total since early March, when shipping activity largely came to a standstill.

Among these vessels, 13 are heading to the Arabian Sea.

Iranian vessels continue to dominate shipping, but after Iran announced it would grant an exemption to “brotherly Iraq,” an oil tanker loaded with Iraqi crude passed through the strait on Sunday. India currently has 8 liquefied petroleum gas tankers transiting.
