Tokyo Electric Power Company said that due to a water pump malfunction, the cooling system for Unit 1’s fuel pool at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station No. 2 has stopped operating. At present, no radiation release or personnel injuries have been reported.

Tokyo Electric Power Company said that at around 2:45 p.m. local time yesterday afternoon, a water pump fault alarm sounded, and on-site inspections found signs of smoke. After the water pump failed, the cooling system stopped operating. The company is currently investigating the cause of the malfunction and working to urgently repair the water pump to restore cooling system operation.

Also, according to a report by Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), when the cooling system stopped operating, the water temperature was 26.5 degrees Celsius, leaving a buffer time of about 8 days before reaching the upper limit of 65 degrees Celsius.
