【Caixin Global】 Since late February, the United States and Israel have launched military raids on Iran, which then retaliated. The war has escalated further and further, and it has now lasted for nearly four weeks. Energy facilities in multiple locations across the Persian Gulf region have been damaged, passage through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted, and the global energy market has been severely affected.

On March 25, Finland’s former prime minister Ahho, speaking at the Boao Forum for Asia 2026 Annual Conference, said that geopolitical conflicts could accelerate the energy crisis, but the crisis is also an opportunity to drive energy transition.

“Today’s crisis sends a warning to every country: each country must continuously increase its share of independently produced oil, while also finding alternative solutions for oil and gas resources.” Ahho said that for companies, the short-term investment returns from transitioning oil and gas are limited; but in the long run, such investments have a certain economic viability. He cited a quote by Churchill, the former British prime minister: that all parties should “not waste a good crisis.”
