Australia is preparing to sue social media platforms that violate youth bans
Australia threatened on Tuesday to sue social media giants, alleging that they are in contempt of a ban aimed at minors under the age of 16. An Australian internet regulator has revealed that it is investigating some of the biggest platforms for allegedly failing to comply with this globally first-of-its-kind measure. Three months after the ban went into effect, the eSafety commissioner said it is investigating potential unlawful conduct by Meta’s Instagram and Facebook, Google’s YouTube, Snapchat, and others. Communications Minister Anika-Wells said the government is collecting evidence “so that the eSafety commissioner can bring legal action in the Federal Court and win.” Wells told reporters in Canberra: “We used a summer to gather evidence—evidence about stories of how children get around the law, without a doubt you’ve all heard these stories......”.
